Stratford Resident - Silas Phillip

 Stratford Resident - Silas Phillips – New York State Senate for Montgomery and Hamilton Counties for 1832

Silas Phillips was born in Dighton, Massachusetts in on August 13th, 1779.   He came to the Stratford area around 1803 – 1804.  His brother also settled here in Stratford.   Silas was a firm supporter of Stratford, as seen in his involvement in town politics for over 30 years.  Silas’s Stratford political career included:

1813       Pound Master

1814       Pound Master

1815       Town Clerk and School Inspector

1816       Commissioner of Highways

1817       Assistant Inspector of Common schools and Fence Viewer

1818       Constable and Fence viewer

1819       Overseer of the Poor and Fence Viewer

1820       Commissioner of Highways

1821       Overseer of Highway Ward 9

1822       Fence Viewer

1823       Commissioner of Highways, Overseer of Highways for Ward 9

1824       Assessor

1826       Town Supervisor

1827      Pound Master

1829       Commissioner of Common Schools

1830       Assessor

1831       Pound Master

1833      Supervisor and Pound Master

1834       Pound Master

1835       Pound Master

1837       Commissioner of Highways, Commissioner of Schools, Overseer of the Poor

 

Silas Phillips not only supported politics in Stratford, he was also active in the Republican Party.   In 1831 he was nominated to the New York State Senate for the Assembly for Montgomery and Hamilton Counties.  NOTE:  Stratford was in Montgomery County until 1838 when Fulton County created. 

Silas passed away August 19, 1869 at the age of 90 years.   He is buried in the Bliss Cemetery in Stratford.
