Edited by Robert Patrick Pender
Like Grass Before the Scythe is a collection of letters written by William Remmel to his family during his active duty in the Civil War 1862 to 1864. The letters in this book provide insight into 121st New York Infantry Regiment, and give a view of life in Devereaux, Herkimer County and Stratford Fulton County, New York. The letters were donated by the Remmel family to the Collections Department of the Mullins Library at the University of Arkansas . Robert Patrick Pender compiled the letters into a book.
In 1849 William’s father, Gotlieb (Caleb) Remmel, immigrated from Hermickle, Germany and settled in Stratford, Fulton County, New York in the hamlet of Emmonsburg. Gotlieb obtained work at the Dutton and Hyde Tannery.
Once settled his wife and children joined him in Stratford. Census records show the family living in Stratford up to 1855. On an unknown date the family home was destroyed by fire and in 1859 they purchased a farm in Herkimer County.
In his letters William Remmel writes to his family about the Civil War. He references local Stratford Citizens and discusses life in Stratford.
