On August 28th, 1948 a plane piloted by Edith J. Hoffman, 21 of Scotia crash landed in a swampy spot between the Guy Hawes and Milford Jennings farms off the Stratford/Knappville Rd, near Hawes Rd.
Miss Hoffman, flying solo was painfully injured and was taken to the Little Falls Hospital with bad lacerations to her forehead, a fractured nose, concussion and general bruises and abrasions. Her injuries were apparently from her head striking the instrument panel during the crash landing.
Miss Hoffman, a licensed pilot had rented the plane for the day and it is believed that she had gotten off course. She attempted to land in a corn field when darkness started to approach.
Those that witnessed the accident said that Miss. Hoffman was lucky to have landed in a swampy area. If the plane had landed a few hundred feet further it would have hit the rocks in the East Canada Creek
The Plane was owned by Mr Lawrence Cantan of Curry Rd, Schenectady. The plane was deemed a total loss. The owner had no insurance on the craft. On the night of the crash Mr Canton and a mechanic dismantled what was left of the wrecked plane, and the parts were loaded on a truck and removed to the airbase in Scotia.
