Arabella Young Green and the Stratford Area Logging camps

I think this must be one of my all-time favorite photos in our collection. It makes me smile every time feeling the sheer pleasure of enjoying the rapids at the Potholers. Meet Arabella Young Green.

The Potholers is located on the Piseco/Pauley Rd. north of Stratford. Laura Goodney was kind enough to allow us to print out the hand written history of Arabella and her family. The writings include a rich insight into the Stratford area and their family.

Arabella Young was born in Three Rivers, Quebec. Her family moved to this area, where she met and married Edward Green.

Ed Green ran a logging camp in the Stratford area, and Arabella cooked for the camp. All 4 of her children lived in the woods with them. In the spring, when there was a lull in logging, Ed  would take  other jobs. One of the jobs he took was as a night foreman in a sawmill in Stratford. Ed Green loved this area and the woods. In the 1920’s Ed Green would take his family camping up in Oregon (Stratford). At the time there was only one family living in Oregon, the Burton family and their six children. The camping trips with the family to Oregon were to be continued over the years.

One of interesting stories that was written about Ed Green was from Ed Everson, an Adirondack Guide, and Stratford Hotel owner. The story goes as follows: “Ed Everson, an old time Adirondack Guide was cooking an early supper for a hunting party from Cortland, NY. It was up on the other end of the meadow at the Powley Place. They heard a large caliber rifle shot from over on a nearby mountain. Ed Everson said, that sounds like Ed Green’s rifle, and it sounds too loud for a deer. I’ll bet he has shot a bear. This remark was handed back and forth all during the evening meal. They couldn’t see how a gun would sound different shooting a deer or a bear. Just as they were cleaning up Uncle Leon came running up the path to see if any of the men could help bring in a big bear”.

Arabella and Edward Green are buried in the Stratford Cemetery.

Thank you Laura Goodney Malin Moody for sharing your Grandmother and Grandfather's history with us.
